A famous landmark in Swansea that has been home to thousands of students since 1955 has been converted into luxury flats
Regalian Clyne have been given the go-ahead to convert Clyne Castle into one, two and three bedroom apartments. For nearly 50 years the Grade Two listed property and its more modern outbuildings have been used as a hall of residence for Swansea University. But the castle, which borders Clyne Gardens, has seen better days and councillors have unanimously approved the scheme, which will not only completely renovate the Castle but new life will be brought to the Gardens surrounding the Immediate Castle with parking for 47 cars.
A handful of locals opposed to the planning application said Clyne Castle would be better used as a conference or education centre and the main road leading to it was too narrow for extra traffic, but it seems that the amount of money needed to bring it back to its former glory could only be generated through its development. There were also concerns that new housing planned for adjoining land would be out of character, the developer disputes this claim suggesting a completely opposite look to the Castle will bring together new and old. Members of Swansea's development control committee visited the site before making a decision due to the controversy over the planning request There has been a house on the site of Clyne Castle since 1791 but there have been additions and changes over the years.
